Train Your Dog to Come When Called

Hi my name is Sindy Flaim and I’m a dog trainer. Today, we’re going to talk to you about how to teach your dog to come when called. One thing about coming when called is that you really want to find something that’s non-emotional, so, I’m going to load a sound for bear here. Who’s offering me all kinds of tricks right now, and I’m going to load him a sound.

So, the way you load a sound with your puppy is you have them sitting right in front of you. You can use their dog foods. You can use yummy treats. Remember that if you’re under high distraction and maybe you’re outside at the park like we are today, you can use something higher motivating. So I’m going to pay you more money you come when i call you than when we’re at home we can use dog food. Outside you’ll probably want to use something a little bit tastier. So I’m going to load the sound or whistle and every time i do that sound/whistle, I’m going to hand bear a treat. I can do a variety of different ways to teach him to come when i call him, and you can use a variety of sounds, but if you can whistle, that’s probably the best thing. So, if it’s noisy, busy, they’re playing with other dogs, they can probably here it pretty well.

Now, if you’re dealing with distraction like playing with other dogs, you might want to make sure that it’s going to work before you start repeating that sound. You don’t want to become background noise. One of the best ways to load this is to do it at home, and then start at a park that doesn’t really have a lot of high distraction. That’s the simple part of loading. Once you’re getting the sound loaded, then I want you to start playing games with your dog. So we can do things like throw a toy, and I’m going to fake bear out with a throw. Once I fake him out, I’m going to make my sound to let him know to turn around. The reward in this case is playing with the toy.

One of my favorite games to play at home to teach your dog to find you and to locate you is hide and seek. It’s the best way to get your dog to know where you are at all times. So, when you’re playing hide and seek, if you have another person, you can have one person hold your dog, you go hide somewhere, and let’s start making it easy at first, just go behind a door or something and then once you do you make your sound/whistle. Your dog runs and finds you; they get a handful of food. It’s a fun game to play. It teaches your dog to find you, instead of you looking everywhere, going where is my puppy.

So, loading sounds, keeping it non-emotional is one of the best ways to teach your dog to come when called. You can also do things like load their name, and then their get rewarded, good puppy/dog. The value of the name is important. If you use words like come, good, good dog. Come, good. And a dog’s favorite game, in the whole wide world, is chase. Make sure you play it a lot with your dog. If they look up at you, and you see that they’ve noticed that you’ve called them, take off running, see if they chase you. Nine times out of ten they probably will.

Be patient with your puppy and you will get a great dog, and now you have learned to train your dog to come when called.

Basic Dog Training Advice – How to Train a Dog to Leave Something Alone

Today we’re talking some basic dog training, specifically about the command leave it. Leave it is a very good command, it comes in very handy because a lot of owners complain about their dog digging through the trash, the laundry basket, the garden, the yard, the toys and that includes the adult toys, the remote, cell phones, etc, etc.

I just use an old empty juice bootle as my forbidden object. You can use any variety of objects with this but the important part is that this is your forbidden object, so in my mind this is something that my dog (Bear) should never ever ever have as a toy.

Now I’m going to present the forbidden object. “Leave it”, “very good boy”, so what I’m actually trying to do is train or program the head turn (when the dog turns the head away from forbidden the forbidden object), I’ll show you this one more time. You will notice that he is touching it with his nose, “leave it, good boy, very very very good.

The more you practice this the better it’s going to work. This is very important because when you’re out on a walk, you could at any encounter a food item that’s discarded in gutter, you don’t know where that food came from, the dog could get any number of things as well as sick, worms, any other number of things.

The other thing that leave it is great for, is that when cars leak radiator fluid, is smells like sweet candy to a dog, and if they lap it up, it’s a slow miserable death so that’s why leave it is so important. So that’s ‘leave it’ a very important and useful command.

Dog Training Advice – How to Train a Dog to Stay

In this dog training advice the topic is getting the dog to stay. The number one reason that dogs fail stay is that on the first outing, people want their dog to sit, stay, while I run down to the coffee shop, come back and expect their dog to still be there. Not going to happen today. Give it a week or two and you will definitely be there.

So now what we want to do is change our trigger word to what is called stay. So Bear’s already in the sit, put him back in the sit position, very very good sit, stay, very good boy. What I’m teaching him is that now stay is the trigger word.

Today that stay was only about two seconds, I counted it of in my head so I didn’t distract him and with repetition I’ll gradually make that longer and longer and longer. So one more time, sit, good boy, stay, very good, very good, every command gets a reward.

Basic Dog Training Advice – How to Train a Dog to Stop Barking

Teach your dog to stop barking in this free dog training video.

The most common mistake i see so many people make is that when their dog is barking, they come up and they pat the dog and they tell them how good they are and they tell them to be quiet and reassure them that you’re home and everything is okay.

In human terms, that work, in dog’s terms what you’re doing is rewarding your dog for barking so the best thing to do is not reward your dog for barking.

Another good example is that when you come home and the dog is barking at the door and you open the door and come in, or even the other way around, if the dog is at the door barking and you let him out, you’re still training them to bark and so as an example, when they are barking, it’s always no or quiet, use a very stern no voice, be consistent, pick a word and stick with it and then reward the quiet.

Always reward the right behavior and you always end up with a wonderful pet.
